As a Martha Guild member, you will be contacted when a St. Paul family is planning a funeral for a loved one and requests a funeral luncheon. The initial contact from the family is to the Martha Guild chairperson. There is usually a 3-5 day notice between the initial call and the funeral. We call our members in rotation so you may not get called every time there is a funeral. There are several ways to serve: kitchen helper, baker, salad maker, JELLO maker and shopper. Several of our members ask to be called based on our need, meaning they are willing to serve on any committee. Others place themselves on the committee that best fits their schedule and other obligations. All volunteers are cherished and appreciated. If you do not have a lot of experience in a kitchen, do not let that discourage you. All you need is the desire to help a family in their time of need. We will teach you and work beside you! Martha Guild is a wonderful way to serve God and share His love. We welcome you to join us and experience the joy that comes with serving in this Women’s Ministry at St. Paul! Please contact the Church Office if you would like to help with this ministry.

If you are a kitchen helper, the co-chairperson will call you and ask if you are available to help with set-up, serving and/or clean up on the specified day. (If you have a prior commitment, she will continue calling other members on the kitchen helper list.) Set-up involves various tasks, such as, setting the tables, arranging desserts on platters, preparing deli trays, brewing coffee, cutting up fruit and veggies for serving platters and arranging flowers in vases. Serving involves pouring coffee and punch, replenishing food platters on the buffet table, and generally assisting guests. Clean up involves clearing tables, running the dishwasher, packaging leftovers, and putting away kitchen utensils.

If you are a baker, your assigned chairperson will call you to ask if you are able to bake. We ask that you bake a cookie recipe that will yield at least 3-4 dozen cookies or a bar cookie recipe (i.e. brownies, lemon squares, etc.) in a 9×13 pan which usually yields about 24 pieces. She will generally ask what kind you’ll bake so she can try to get a variety of desserts from our bakers. She will also tell you when to drop off your baked goods in the church kitchen. It is recommended that all baked goods arrive in an airtight disposable container labeled “For Martha Guild” but if you choose to use your own airtight container, please be sure your name is on it. We will wash it and place it on the table in the hallway adjacent to the church kitchen. Most ladies just pick up their containers after church the next Sunday.

If you are a salad maker, your assigned chairperson will call to ask if you can make pasta, potato or macaroni salad that will yield about 4-5 pounds. She will let you know when to drop it off at the church kitchen. It is recommended that all salads arrive in an airtight disposable container labeled “For Martha Guild” but if you choose to use your own container, please be sure your name is on it. We will wash it and place it on the table in the hallway adjacent to the church kitchen. Most ladies just pick up their containers after church the next Sunday.

If you are a JELLO maker, your assigned chairperson will call you to ask for a 9×13 container of a JELLO recipe. She will let you know when to drop it off at the church kitchen. It is recommended that all JELLO arrive in a container labeled “For Martha Guild”. Please be sure your name is on it. We will wash it and place it on the table in the hallway adjacent to the church kitchen. Most ladies just pick up their containers after church the next Sunday.

If you are a shopper, the co-chairperson will call you with the date and time of the funeral. She will also tell you the number of guests we will be planning to serve. You will shop for all needed supplies, which usually includes deli meats and cheeses, breads, fresh fruit and vegetables, baked bean recipe ingredients and assorted condiments and punch recipe ingredients. You will be reimbursed by our treasurer  when you give her your receipts.
