James: Mercy Triumphs DVD study by Beth Moore. Bible scholars compare James to the prophet Amos. In other ways James more closely resembles the Book of Proverbs than any New Testament book. Come along with Beth Moore on a journey to get to know both the man and the Book of James. You will never be the same again.
Topics in this study include: joy, hardship, faith, reversal of fortunes for rich and poor, wisdom, gifts from above, single-mindedness, the dangers of the tongue, humility, and prayer. Facilitator: Lisa BachmanLook for the table display and DVD preview in the atrium this Sunday between services. Sign up for one of the two offerings and study guides will be available for purchase. “What exactly does the Martha Guild do here at St. Paul?”

The purpose of the Martha Guild is to prepare and serve a luncheon or refreshments at St. Paul Lutheran Church following the funeral or memorial service for a member of our congregation or a person in the immediate family of a member. Some food items are purchased, while others are prepared and donated by our members.  The Martha Guild will usually serve a minimum of 25 to a maximum of 100 people.

“Why is this ladies’ group called the Martha Guild?”

In Luke 10:38-42 and John 11:17-45, you can read about Martha’s story. Martha (oldest sister of Mary and Lazarus) was known for her hospitality and her attention to detail.  While both Mary and Martha loved Jesus and were eager to serve him, Mary’s focus differed from Martha’s. One of the lessons from Martha’s story focuses on the proper time to listen to Jesus and a proper time to work for him. Certainly, a heart willing to serve Him grows out of having listened to Him.  We serve and care because of Him.

“What are some of the specific tasks that members of the Martha Guild do for a luncheon?”

There are many different tasks that are completed by many people; it is truly a team effort.  Some members make phone calls to organize the ladies that will actually set-up, serve and clean up, while others make calls to the food preparers (baked goods, salads, jellos and baked beans). Then there are the ladies that actually prepare the food and drop it off the day of the luncheon. There are also food shoppers that shop for the fresh produce and deli items that are needed.

“What if I want to help but have other responsibilities that may interfere from time to time?”

Every member of the Martha Guild is in this situation.  As women, we often are juggling many responsibilities regardless of our ages. Our organization is structured to offset that very element of our lives. We call our volunteers in rotation, knowing that they may have a conflict on a certain date.  If a member is not available, we simply call them the next time a luncheon is being planned. As our membership numbers grow, so does the time between calls. It works out very well.

“How can I join the Martha Guild? Can I request what task I would like to do?”

If you would like to join the Martha Guild (or even just ask more questions about this ministry), please contact Tammy Smanik (tsmanik@yahoo.com or 440-808-8534) or Cindy Duran (mcduran6@gmail.com or 440-308-1681).  Yes, you can request a specific task.  Some ladies offer to serve where the need is greatest, but many feel more comfortable serving in a specific way. Either offer of assistance is most welcome!

While Women’s Ministry wants all women to be able to participate in strengthening their relationship with God, we don’t want the economic pressures prevent you from joining in. We offer confidential financial scholarships as assistance. Please contact the Women’s Ministry office for more information.
