Lutheran
West Youth Wrestling Club:
It’s easy to live life in the fast lane. There is much to do
and so little time. There are deadlines
to meet, planes to catch, shopping and the list goes on and on. Sometimes it’s
difficult to slow down and have some “down” time with our families. You know,
uninterrupted and relaxing time to talk, listen and generally build healthy
relationships. For our family it became essential to schedule it in. Whether it was a “family time” or “one on one” time
with a particular child, it was made a priority. Unfortunately, so many
psychological and parenting journals propagate the notion that it’s not the
quantity of time you spend with children; it’s the quality of time. Boy, have
we ever rationalized that one. I went to
a conference years ago where a professor actually said that most parents spent
too much time with their children! Hmm, I’ll just tell my son I’ve got 10
minutes for him this week but it’ll be a great time. Big deal! That whole
concept of quality vs. quantity simply isn’t true. Children need both. Rick Warren writes in his book, The
Purpose Driven Life, “Time is your most precious gift (and the best
expression of your love) because you only have a set amount of it. You can make
more money but you can’t make more time. When you give someone your time, you
are giving them a portion of your life you’ll never get back.” The Bible talks about “reaping what you sow”
which is so wonderfully captured in the 70’s song “Cat’s in the Cradle” by
Harry Chapin.
