Called to Be a Hearer | Matthew 5:13-16
Sermon Summary:
This is the beginning of a series entitled “Called to Be”, which will explore some of the main callings/vocations God has given us. We have to start at the very center of our lives–our relationship with God. We are first and foremost Christians. Every other vocation God gives us lives under the “Christian umbrella.” We will especially explore how we can learn how God wants us to live. We do this by being in church and hearing God’s Word. Therefore, a core vocation we have is as “hearers.” You have to regularly hear from God in order to faithfully live according to His will in every vocation He has given you.
We are looking for what is right.
God gives us our identity. We are first and foremost Christians.
God also calls us into different vocations in our lives. This is how we live out our identity.
In order to do and be right, we must continually hear from God.
What is the relationship between pastor and hearer?
Titus 1:9: The pastor “must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.”
1 Thessalonians 5:12-13: “We ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.
Hebrews 13:17: “Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you.”
You must be a hearer of the Word before you can be a doer of the Word.
