Called to Be in a Family | Colossians 3:12-21

Sermon Summary:

As we continue examining the different holy vocations God has given us, this week we look at how God creates families. Last week we looked at how God creates men and women to be different and to fill different roles in the design of His creation. We also looked at God’s will for the marriage relationship between a husband and a wife. This week we look at what happens when God blesses a husband and wife to become a father and a mother. The family is at the very center of God’s creation. It is the heartbeat of God’s world. It is a wonderful privilege to be a parent and to raise up a child in the faith, to follow Jesus all the days of their lives. We will look at what God gives for parents to do, and what a blessing children are.

  • Family life in a nutshell: “Ordinary faith, lived out with extraordinary consequence.”

  • Children are not a burden to be postponed until it feels convenient; they are a blessing, an inheritance from the Lord (Psalm 127:3).

  • The rhythm of the family should mimic the rhythm of the Christian life.

  • The main goal of parenting is to raise children who will follow Jesus all the days of their lives.

  • What are the different roles God gives to fathers, mothers, and grandparents?

  • Dads are called to be a “foggy picture of God.” Dads are to be a model of God’s grace in the home.

  • “The homemaker has the ultimate career. All other careers exist for one purpose only–and that is to support the ultimate career.” (C.S. Lewis)

  • Moms are called to nurture their children in all ways.

  • Grandparents are called to be the keepers of the faith.

  • The church supports parents in their vocations.

  • Being a parent is the most wonderful, hardest thing God will ever give you to do.
